The evil Garmadon regularly tries to conquer the city of Ninjago, but is foiled by the secret ninja force led by the Green Ninja, who unbeknownst to the world is Garmadon’s estranged son Lloyd. When an even more dangerous foe is unleashed on the city can they work together to save it?
The third Lego film feels a rather lacklustre affair compared to the previous two and there is a definite sense of ever decreasing returns. The fact that this set of characters were ultimately created to sell toys goes some way to explaining the identikit personalities and frankly I could not differentiate the five other ninjas for you if not for their colour coding. The estranged father/son story is familiar, as is Jackie Chan’s wise sensei. As for the wacky comedy of the other films, it is there in flashes, but not nearly enough.
It is not a lost cause though, my six year old Lego Ninjago fan loved it to bits and thanks to numerous episodes of the smaller scale cartoons these are characters he was ecstatic to see on the big screen.
