Misinterpreting an invitation to watch the current Barden Bellas as an opportunity to sing together again our favourite a capella group decide that their real jobs aren’t exciting enough and organise a swan song by taking part in a USO tour in Europe.
The original Pitch Perfect is amazing entertainment, archly funny, full of fun musical moments and with a perfectly coherent plot and character arcs for those involved. The sequel expanded the cast, took us to the world championships and mostly had a reason to do so. The final film gets by with the fun musical moments and a brisk pace at only 93 minutes. If you enjoyed the originals you will absolutely be entertained but you will be left a little confused as to what the point was. Goodness knows what anyone who hasn’t seen the originals would think.
Clearly the film makers struggled as well. At one point we are told the Bellas will be touring 4 counties in 4 days, but we only see Spain, Italy and France. There are a few subplots hinted at that barely register such as the love interests for two of our leads and a supposed conflict with an all girl band called Ever Moist (really?). Whilst Fat Amy’s long last father (John Lithgow) feels as though he has key scenes missing – at one point he and Amy are walking downstairs to applause and you wonder why. If you are familiar with the trailers you will also spot missing scenes.
So it’s a disaster then? Not entirely. Anna Kendrick is still great as Becca and the cast are clearly having fun. But what keeps it afloat is the music, so if you are a sucker for a capella montages then go have some fun.
