Sarah Winchester (Helen Mirren) is the heir to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company and believes that her home is haunted by those people killed by the weapon her company makes. The company’s board seek a medical assessment of her competence to run the company and they select Dr. Eric Price (Jason Clarke) to assess her.
Taking its starting point from an odd true story (Winchester perpetually had work done on her home for 38 years) this is a horror film that focuses on spirits with unfinished business in a haunted house setting. It’s truly original idea is that it has an anti gun stance, although it fumbles this at the end when people pick up a rifle to defend themselves from apparitions!
Clarke and Mirren are decent enough but they have little to work with in terms of plot with the film relying mostly on jump scares but not really building any impending sense of dread. Effective as those jumps might be, it won’t hold long in the memory.
