Love, Simon

love-simon-posterSimon (Nick Robinson) is a normal teenage boy who gets coffee with his friends, likes his parents and is all set to graduate from school. But he has one big secret, he is gay.

Love, Simon is a picture perfect white middle class coming out story. There is no grit and very little drama to speak of and everything is insipid and twee. I could only count two fleeting moments in the entire film where for an infinitesimal moment it sparked an emotion. And yet it’s blandness makes it hard to hate as well, because the thought that this might be useful to a closeted teen still gives me hope that it might be a worthwhile endeavour.

And spare a thought for Jennifer Garner who is typecast as “caring middle aged mother” whilst her ex gets to be Batman! Hollywood at its finest.

I would urge you to seek out Call Me By Your Name, Moonlight or Brokeback Mountain if you are seeking better examples of the same subject matter.
