Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) returns in this rebooted version of Tomb Raider. Based aptly on the rebooted version of the game, this is a much grittier and deadly serious version of Lara and sees her travelling to an uninhabited island near Japan in search of her missing father.
Being brutally honest I found this film to be a terrible bore. It has no action scenes to recommend, it stretches credibility beyond breaking point in such a po-faced feature and it so desperately wants to be Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade that you may as well just watch that infinitely superior film. Now it’s feasible this disappointment could stem from the enjoyment I’ve had in playing the rebooted games, but the reality is that it’s far more enjoyable to play a game with a basic storyline and characterisation than it is to have to watch a 2 hour film with them.
The film is effectively split into three parts. Part one shows us a hip London Lara, who refuses to use her inheritance, works as a cycling courier and does some MMA. This section tells us that Lara is a tough customer but goes on for a seemingly long time and has some cringe worthy action moments. Part two is the most intriguing, or at least should be. Lara finds the island and the evil bad guy is revealed (Walton Goggins with very little to work with). But, despite some pleasing imagery and promise of action, the film makers tire of this section quickly and move us on. Part three is the actual tomb raiding which involves us suppressing the urge to want to watch Indiana Jones.
I’m sure you could enjoy this is a “dumb” action movie if you literally gave no plot point a second thought (how do people stuck on an uninhabited island for 7 years have such good teeth and muscle tone? How did such an elaborate tomb get built on an island impossible to get to? Why is anyone doing any of the things they are doing?), but unfortunately I failed.
