Unsane

duu63i5w4aa6se8-819x1024Sawyer Valentini (Claire Foy) has moved over 450 miles to avoid her stalker, but when she is involuntarily placed in a mental home she thinks he may be posing as one of the orderlies.

Steven Soderbergh‘s latest film has the gimmick of being entirely shot on an iPhone but if no one told you I suspect you wouldn’t notice. Instead you might comment on the slightly disorienting nature of the images in front of you which fits very well with the storyline. Sawyer’s state of mind is the main character here and Claire Foy’s strong performance and the visuals go a very long way to making you feel her uncertainty.

As a sub plot, Soderbergh is clearly interested in the American health care system as well and in that respect it’s very much a companion piece to another one of his films – Side Effects. Both look at mental instability but both also look at failings within the industry to support those patients.

Unsane isn’t quite as good as Side Effects though. It has some incredibly strong moments, but struggles to keep the tension and momentum throughout. An interesting experiment.
