Jake Pentacost (John Boyega), son of apocalypse cancelling Stacker, is a thief who sells Jaeger parts for a living. When he gets caught he has the choice of prison or training the new recruits for the giant robots. Luckily this is just in time to save the world and follow in his dads footsteps.
Five years ago Guillermo Del Toro brought us what should have been an epic battle between giant robots (Jaegers) and giant monsters (Kaiju). Instead it was a mostly dull, overly hammy love letter to Godzilla. Opting out of the sequel to make Oscar winning The Shape of Water he has handed the reigns to Steven S DeKnight who is most famous as the writer of TV’s Spartacus. DeKnight has succeeded in bringing us an even duller film, although perhaps with slightly less hammy speeches.
The main issue here is there is literally nothing to care about. None of the characters make an impact, none of the robot designs are interesting and the monsters don’t even show up until the final 30 minutes of a nearly 2 hour film!
If you found any interest in the original then maybe you will find some here, otherwise I would steer clear.
