Blockers

blockers-new-film-posterThree parents try to stop their kids having sex on prom night. Blockers has such a simple premise that it might surprise you how fresh it feels.

Firstly, following the excellent Game Night, Hollywood seems to have realised comedies with scripts and plots can yield results. Secondly, the story is well told from both the adults and teenagers point of view. And finally the fact that the teenagers are women allows the film to comment on gender double standards.

The adults get most of the best gags (although perhaps I’m now too old to get some of the younger humour!) with Leslie Mann, John Cena and Ike Barinholtz forming an unlikely but very funny comedy team. Cena has now consistently proven his comedy chops in supporting roles and gets to really shine here.

The teenagers played by Kathryn Newton, Geraldine Viswanathan and Gideon Adlon get to play believable teens and be funny whilst being chased down by their parents.

Blockers certainly tickled my funny bone.
