Ghost Stories

ghost-stories-poster-4Professor Goodman (Andy Nyman) debunks the paranormal for a living. When he is given three unexplainable cases he investigates incidents involving a night watchman (Paul Whitehouse), a teenage boy (Alex Lawther) and a businessman (Martin Freeman).

Ghost Stories is based on a theatre production created by Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson who write and direct here. Understanding their previous work will give you a very good idea of the creepy and clever happenings in this film. Nyman has written the great majority of Derren Brown’s tv specials, whilst Dyson co-wrote The League of Gentlemen tv shows and film. This results in a blend of psychological cues to amp up the terror, creepy moments and the occasional moment of humour (well, one hilarious tension reducing moment at least).

The cast do a good job of creating odd individuals and the lighting and sound are deployed very well to create shocks. It achieves its job of being tense and scary, but perhaps the final clearing up of loose threads isn’t as satisfying as it could be.
