Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation

mv5botfmnda3zjmtn2y0mc00ndyylwfly2utntq4otqxmmy1nmvjxkeyxkfqcgdeqxvyntg4ndq4ndy-_v1_Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) must track down the head of a secret organisation of rogue agents with the added complication that his own organisation, the Impossible Mission Force has been disbanded.

The fifth instalment of the Mission Impossible franchise sees writing and directing duties handed to Christopher McQuarrie, a man with many links to Cruise. McQuarrie wrote and directed Jack Reacher and wrote Valkyrie, Edge of Tomorrow and The Mummy reboot. This working relationship has led to one of the best films in the franchise with some spectacular stunts and most importantly a key new character.

As far as the stunts go, Rogue Nation features some spectacular moments. It starts with Cruise hanging from a plane that is taking off (of course done for real), features an underwater robbery reminiscent of the originals convoluted act of larceny dangling from wires and my favourite is a superb motorcycle chase to match anything from the 2nd film. Everything is done as far as possible for real and it looks stunning.

From a plot perspective what makes this one of the more thrilling films is that Hunt meets his match in terms of both friend and foe. The best part of the film is Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), an MI6 agent who is just as committed to her job as Hunt. And new villain Lane (Sean Harris) is equal to Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s villain in the third film.

A fantastic action movie and a franchise reinvigorated by some new additions in front and behind the camera.
