Whilst working as a Triad enforcer Ito (Joe Taslim) has an epiphany when he is unable to see a little girl gunned down with her family. Returning home he seeks his friends help in getting her out of the country, but another friend Arian (Iko Uwais) also works for the Triad and has his sights set on promotion.
The Night Comes for us is brought to life by the new breed of action film experts currently dominating Asian cinema. Written and directed by Timo Tjahjanto (one half of the Mo Brothers) and starring Raid veteran Iko Uwais who was also the Action coordinator this is a masterclass in action fight scenes. It’s story however is its Achilles heel and could be described as passable.
Let’s talk about what’s good before we discuss its drawbacks though. The action sequences here are terrific. Consisting of expertly choreographed fights with multiple protagonists, weapons (both makeshift and actual) and long sequences edited together in a way that allows you to appreciate the physical and technical skill on display. The final 30 minutes features a girl fight between Julie Estelle (Hammer girl from the Raid 2) and the 2 female baddies who have some brutal weapons we’ve already seen in use and the final showdown that features a ridiculous amount of bloodletting from anything that comes to hand. It’s brutal, wince inducing and brilliant.
Story wise though we have just enough to propel us through to the fights. A brotherhood broken by the Triad, an epiphany that we all just need to have faith in, sacrifices that seem unearned and Julie Estelle’s character literally just shows up to kick ass with no real explanation (perhaps other than she is in all of Tjahjanto’s films!). As far as it goes it’s fine, but if it could have lived up to the action this would be a force to be reckoned with.
