The final chapter in an animated trilogy spanning 9 years features Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and Toothless facing a danger that forces them to seek The Hidden World. A mythical place where dragons are thought to originate and perhaps the only safe place left for them when a new threat in the form of dragon hunter Grimmel (F. Murray Abraham) arrives.
The plot in the main focuses on Toothless and Hiccup’s move into adulthood and their romantic relationships with a new Light Fury and Astrid (America Ferrera) whilst they face the possibility their futures aren’t with each other. Oddly, the second films best character, Valka (Cate Blanchett) is mostly sidelined whilst other side characters feature more prominently such as the bickering twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut (Kristen Wiig and Justin Rupple).
It’s a really entertaining and solid ending for one of the best animated trilogies out there (Toy Story just pips it). The animation is stunning and at its best when they first enter the Day-Glo Hidden World for the first time, a scene that had me wondering how spectacular it might have been in 3D. And Grimmel is a great villain following in the footsteps of Drago in the second film.
Whilst the ending didn’t hit me as emotionally as the second film it’s a fantastic send off for these characters.
