Best friends Jen (Jackie van Beek) and Mel (Madeleine Sami) offer a public service for the right price. Stuck in a bad relationship and too scared to break it off yourself? Jen and Mel will irreparably break that relationship for you.
This breezy New Zealand comedy arrives on Netflix using executive producer Taika Waititi’s name recognition (director of Thor Ragnarok) to get itself higher up on the Netflix algorithm. And thank goodness for that. Writer-director-stars Jackie van Beek and Madeleine Sami have put together a genuinely laugh out loud funny comedy that focuses on two women’s friendship all wrapped up in a swift 82 minutes.
It’s refreshing to see a comedy brimming with ideas that also knows not to stretch itself too thin. Van Beek plays the hard hearted straight man to Sami’s more goofy character who starts to worry if they are doing the right thing. Throw in a cameo from Jemaine Clement and a dance finale and it’s great fun.
