Saraya Knight (Florence Pugh) is from a wrestling family in Norwich. Her father Ricky (Nick Frost) is an ex convict, her mother Julia (Lena Headey) used to be homeless. But they saved each other when they created their own low budget wrestling show and Saraya and her brother Zak (Jack Lowden) become stars of the show. This film is the based on a true story tale of how Saraya became WWE legend Paige.
Fighting with my family is a peculiar film. Written and directed by Stephen Merchant, best known for his writing work with Ricky Gervais, it features American stars Dwayne Johnson (for 3 scenes) and Vince Vaughn as well as some talented English actors as mentioned earlier. The basic structure of the film is exactly as you would expect, kids dream of wrestling fame, opportunity knocks, obstacles appear and are overcome, but its execution is good and it’s warm hearted.
Pugh is excellent in the lead role, doing a good job of the physical and emotional aspects of the role. Although it’s Nick Frost’s performance that stands out the most. Easily his best since Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. When he’s on screen you are guaranteed a laugh. It’s also really refreshing to see a believable English setting on the big screen as well complete with council estate flats and pubs.
Even as a non wrestling fan I was entertained.
