Sir Lionel Frost (Hugh Jackman) dreams of taking his rightful place in the society of great gentlemen explorers. Unfortunately though he has not quite been able to prove the existence of mythical creatures. Following a bet with his rival, Lord Piggot-Dunceby (Stephen Fry) he heads out to find the Sasquatch and prove his doubters wrong.
Laika studios have produced five glorious stop motion animation films since their founding in 2005. In the last decade they have given us Coraline, Paranorman, The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings and now Missing Link. All of them are intelligent, beautifully realised films for both children and adults and easily match the quality of Pixar’s opening films
Given their current status they are able to get the cream of the crop from a voice cast perspective. With a mixture of big Hollywood names such as Hugh Jackman, Zoe Saldana, Zach Galifianakis and Timothy Olyphant alongside some well known British comedians and actors such as David Walliams, Matt Lucas, Stephen Fry and Emma Thompson. Fry is particularly funny channeling his Blackadder Goes Forth character General Sir Anthony Cecil Hogmanay Melchett. Although the pick of the cast is probably Jackman who delivers his slightly selfish and arrogant lead in a sympathetic way.
The animation, as anyone who has seen their other films is absolutely beautiful. And as per some of their other films hang around during the credits to see how some of it is produced. It really does look stunning and the range of environments the adventurers travel through here is spectacular. Another nice visual touch is the use of maps to show the train, plane and ship voyages our group go on, which is a little similar to the likes of Indiana Jones.
The story itself is a lot of fun as well and does not take the obvious paths you might think it would. I found it constantly amusing and always entertaining.
Brilliant
