Jack Malik (Himesh Patel) is a struggling musician until a freak accident occurs. When the entire world’s electricity blacks out for twelve seconds he is hit by a bus and becomes the only person in the world to remember The Beatles.
Danny Boyle and Richard Curtis’ dream team collaboration is a high concept feel good romp that any Beatles fan will surely enjoy. With Malik passing off their songs as his own we get to hear many renditions of their great songs. Himesh Patel sings and plays the instruments for real and his energy and enthusiasm is exciting.
Whilst the high concept gives the film its hook, the heart lies in the unrequited love story between Malik and his best friend, manager and roadie Ellie Appleton (Lily James). James, the shining light in Mamma Mia! Here we go again is fantastic here even with a few clunky story moments. Whilst the comedy mostly comes from Ed Sheeran playing himself, Kate McKinnon playing a ruthless manager and Joel Fry playing a useless roadie friend of Malik’s. Sheeran’s acting performance is much improved from his Game of Thrones cameo, even taking the mickey out of himself in some scenes.
Boyle’s direction is full of its usual buzz and speed. Creating a light and fun atmosphere. It seems he is capable of turning his hand to any genre.
Criticisms would be that it’s still a lightweight romantic comedy, just one underpinned by music from The Beatles and Ed Sheeran. So stay away if they aren’t your preferred music of choice!
It’s a great time for rock music fans who want to watch films with their favourite songs right now. Following Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman and this we still have Blinded By The Light to come this year featuring Bruce Springsteen’s songs.
