The Men In Black have gone international, with the London agency in need of assistance in saving the universe from the scum of the universe. Enter new recruit Molly (Tessa Thompson) and arrogant up and coming Agent H (Chris Hemsworth) to jet set through Paris, Marrakesh, Naples and London in their efforts to keep a super weapon out of the wrong hands.
I have always found the Men In Black films to be littered with interesting ideas that are never followed through to a satisfying conclusion and there is nothing in the fourth instalment to change my mind. The opening introductions to Molly and H are both fun and the parallel mentor / mentee relationships between Molly /Agent O (Emma Thompson) and Agent H / High T (Liam Neeson) are initially intriguing but nothing really comes of them. Elsewhere the film feels over edited or as if it discards threads out of forgetfulness.
As a summer blockbuster film it is merely fine. The “mystery” is obvious immediately, the effects are average, no set piece stands out, the villain (Rebecca Ferguson as a three armed alien) is an afterthought and the comic relief (Kumail Nanjiani as a tiny alien chess piece) has the occasional moment.
It certainly doesn’t have the verve of the original, but isn’t necessarily worse than the other sequels.
