Spider-Man Far From Home is a huge spoiler for Avengers Endgame, so stop reading now if you haven’t seen that film!
Opening with a very enjoyable light hearted explanation of the five year”blip” half the Earth experienced following the “snap”, Peter Parker’s class are going on a European vacation. Unfortunately for him, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and new super hero Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) need his help against elementals attacking the Earth.
Far From Home achieves some really fantastic things in its post Endgame Marvel Cinematic Universe. First and foremost is it’s humour and lighthearted approach to an Iron Man free world. It sets its stall out early with a school news bulletin and is repeatedly funny all the way through to the two post credit sequences. Secondly it realises one of Spider-Man’s most famous villains both with a terrific acting performance and superb visual effects. It truly is a dream like experience for fans of the comics. Finally, it really nails the action scenes. It really feels like director Jon Watts has learnt from his first foray into blockbuster cinema and the final sequences in London are spectacular fun.
It feels like classic Spider-Man. It’s light, funny and pure escapism. Tom Holland is exceptional as Peter Parker / Spider-Man and Zendaya matches him as a really quirky MJ.
Hopefully with this formula, Marvel’s guiding hand over this Sony property and the comics second to none catalogue of villains we can see some more brilliant Spider-Man films.
