Hustlers

12142FA5-46AF-4BD0-98DC-6DCB5CACCDABInspired by a true story Hustlers is about a group of strippers who seek less legal means of making money when the financial crisis of 2008 dries up their custom.

Feeling very much like a companion piece to The Wolf of Wall Street and with the rise of the women’s illegal activities taking the feel of Goodfellas this is a fantastic film that everyone should seek out.

Constance Wu and Jennifer Lopez take the lead roles as Destiny and Ramona. The former a fledgling in the industry trying to help pay her grandmother’s bills, whilst the latter full of experience and prepared to take Destiny under her wing. The friendship they form is electric and the real focus of the film. Both Wu and Lopez are excellent and if the producers can convince the Academy that Lopez is a supporting actress here she must be a hot favourite for an Oscar. Lopez had some outstanding performances in early films such as U Turn and Out of Sight but this tops both of those and really shows how good an actress she can be.

Other highlights are the excellent use of music (Fiona Apple has never been used in a film to such good effect), the hint of an unreliable narrator and some excellent support from Julia Stiles as the journalist writing their story.

Writer/director Lorene Scafaria most famous for her debut Seeking A Friend For The End of The World, another film with excellent use of music has created an exceptional film.

Hang around for a mid credits scene as well.
