Opening with the awkward morning after we get to see a montage of Jibran and Leillani’s (Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae) burgeoning relationship before cutting to four years later and the start of a defining argument for them. One that culminates in them hitting a cyclist with their car, a policeman commandeering their vehicle and them going on the run for murder.
The Lovebirds comedy is all about putting a couple into increasingly ridiculous scenarios where ostensibly they are trying to solve a murder, but are actually working through their relationship issues. There is some good chemistry between our lead pairing that sells those arguments but the comedy can be a little hit and miss. There are a few stand out belly laugh moments though which make it a decent enough watch.
It is the sort of film that will keep you entertained for a couple hours but it isn’t vital or eminently re-watchable, even if it does have the greatest Katy Perry song moment in a film (even better than Madagascar 3).
