Lucy (Geraldine Viswanathan) falls upon the idea of creating a gallery where people can leave mementos of past relationships following the crushing collapse of her first grown up love affair.
It is worth opening right from the beginning that this is a joyous, funny and uplifting romantic comedy and in the main this seems to be due to two exciting new talents. Writer/Director Natalie Krinsky clearly knows her rom-coms as her script hits every genre trope but manages to do so with verve and just the right level of self deprecation. Spot Lucy holding a boombox above her head jokingly (Say Anything) or the final grand gesture being called out as a grand gesture for examples of this fun. Lead actress Geraldine Viswanathan steals the show though announcing herself as a major new comedy talent. Her performance is infectious. She manages to fill her character with hopelessly romantic forlornness as well as being full of vibrancy and fun. Her chemistry with her best friends played by Molly Gordon and Phillipa Soo is palpable and the slow burn romance she builds with Stranger Things’ Dacre Montgomery makes you root for them to get together.
Fans of the genre will absolutely love this film. If you are yet to be convinced by romantic comedies or are not a hopeless romantic yourself, do not let the title or synopsis fool you. This hits all of the hallmarks of the genre just right and may just make you believe in movie love after all!
