Kajillionaire

Old Dolio (Evan Rachel Wood) and her parents Robert (Richard Jenkins) and Theresa (Debra Winger) are petty criminals who live in a leaking office space and stay under the radar. Old Dolio has never known anything other than this criminal life until Melanie (Gina Rodriguez) enters it and opens her eyes to a world where tenderness and love could possibly exist.

When we meet Old Dolio and her family they are subsisting through life in a series of small time grifts and scams. Stealing a tie and returning a watch to a rich family is enough to keep them going. That is until their landlord insists they pay their overdue rent, something that throws their regimented lives into something of a tailspin. Entering into a more elaborate scam to make the money they need they meet Melanie and whilst Old Dolio is initially angry at this newcomer entering their bubble it is here she starts to realise that her parents may not have offered her the traditional love that most parents give their children.

To say Kajillionaire is quirky is an understatement. This family have a synchronised alarm that reminds them to collect the pink sud like bubbles that leak into their makeshift home everyday at 5pm and every time there is an earthquakes tremor they are terrified it could be the “big one”. But the all round excellent performances win you over with Gina Rodriquez stealing the show as the talkative Melanie.

Kajillionaire is a hard sell on plot line alone but it has a quirky sense of humour and performances to match that give it some winning moments.
