On The Rocks

When Laura (Rashida Jones) starts to suspect that her husband may be cheating on her she opens up to her father Felix (Bill Murray) who suggests that following him might be the best course of action.

Sofia Coppola’s latest film is very much in her oeuvre. Our main character is a woman who due to a feeling of ennui has found herself lost and unsure how to find herself again. Laura is a writer who is blocked, has a husband who is so busy at work he is always absent and two young children that she loves dearly but who leave her exhausted at the end of the day. So it is no surprise that when her husband Dean (Marlon Wayans) returns from a business trip and acts slightly peculiarly that her self doubt spirals to the thought that he may be cheating on her.

Turning to her father for advice would seem fairly ordinary if it were not for the fact that he was a womaniser. A man whose philosophy is that men’s primal animalistic desires make it impossible to be faithful. It is almost the extreme of When Harry Met Sally’s men and women can not just be friends mantra.

Our leading pair work well together. Jones is completely believable as a burned out working mother whilst Murray is his usual enigmatic self. There are moments of genuine mirth with my highlight being a police traffic stop.

Ultimately though the films charms are slight and it never becomes more than moderately engaging.
