When Jay (Peter Sarsgaard) is driving his daughter Kayla (Joey King) to her dance camp she spots her friend on the side of the road and they offer her a lift. However when something goes horribly wrong they decide to tell a lie to save themselves.
The Lie is one of four films that horror production company Blumhouse released onto Amazon Prime in time for Halloween. Written and directed by Veena Sud this is much more of a psychological thriller than horror movie. It essentially plays out as a university philosophy discussion on whether a lie can ever be kept from being found out and the psychological damage it can do to those telling it.
Rounding out the main cast are Mireille Enos as Kayla’s mother and Cas Anvar as the father of Kayla’s friend. All four actors give committed performances but frankly there is little they can do to elevate it above cliche. At a certain point I was almost wishing for it to roll out a supernatural jump scare and at just 97 minutes long it was a trial to get to the end. And the less said about that ending the better.
Highly missable.
