The Hunt (2020)

Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing without any memory of how they got there or who each other is. In the middle of the field is a crate with weapons and then The Hunt begins.

The Hunt has a very simple set up, some mild allusions to class war and an awful lot of exuberant and funny death.

A group of wealthy woke individuals who argue over whose charity work is more important than the others have decided that hunting and killing a group of “deplorables” would be an awful lot of fun. That word is important as it is what Hilary Clinton once used to refer to Donald Trump’s racist, sexist and homophobic supporters. But are these people as stupid and as bad as those that they mock? Honestly speaking I found the class warfare aspect of the film a little muddled and not anywhere near as much fun as the much simpler humans hunting humans aspect of the film. It is here that it excels with a comic horror string of violent and ridiculous deaths.

A lot of enjoyment is to be had in the opening minutes as the film gives us fake lead one after the other before we see them meet an untimely demise before settling on our true (anti) hero, Crystal (Betty Gilpin). Gilpin is probably best known for her work on Netflix Series Glow where she plays an amateur wrestler and kicks ass. Something she does equally well here too. Whilst her rendition of the story of the tortoise and the hare is hilarious.

A lot of throwaway fun.
