Honest Thief

Tom Dolan (Liam Neeson) is the honest thief of the title. When he meets Annie (Kate Walsh) he decides to give up his old ways and turn himself in. Unfortunately corrupt FBI agents Nivens (Jai Courtney) and Hall (Anthony Ramos) have other ideas for the money Tom wants to return.

Liam Neeson’s action career renaissance has created a mixed bag of enjoyable and forgettable movies. Unfortunately Honest Thief firmly sits in the latter category.

Tom Dolan fits into the Neeson Everyman. An ex marine with a moral core who has his reasons for doing the wrong things. He is set up for a crime he didn’t commit by two FBI agents who fit the good cop, bad cop mould. Nivens is an evil sadist whilst Hall is the family man who just went to far and is regretting it within seconds. Then of course we have Agent Meyers (Jeffrey Donovan) who is the experienced old hand who Dolan will convince of his innocence.

Every aspect of the plot plays out exactly as you would expect it to and there are literally zero thrills to be had from the action sequences. The fact that there is zero chemistry between Neeson and Walsh, who in true Hollywood style is fifteen years his junior does not help matters.

The only character that is of any interest throughout is Donovan’s Meyers but unfortunately he is not the focus.

Do yourself a favour and and find something else to spend your time with.
