His House

Bol (Sope Dirisu) and Rial (Wunmi Mosaku) are a refugee couple seeking asylum in the UK. When they are assigned a house to live in it appears to contain an evil that may have followed them to their new home.

His House is the debut feature film from writer/director Remi Weekes and it may well be the best horror film of 2020. His House merges the popular psychological horror of the current era with good old fashioned jump scares and scary images in a film that managed to make me jump multiple times and fill me with dread.

Throughout flashbacks we see Bol and Rial’s harrowing escape from Sudan. A journey that included the loss of their daughter Nyagak (Malaika Wakoli-Abigaba) as well as many others. Whilst in the UK, in a country so alien they are not actually sure what city they are in they are placed in a run down house with poor wiring and holes in the walls. Perfect for eyes and fingers to peer and reach through when the lights go out. Is it their grief and struggle to adapt to this new setting that is making them have nightmares or has an evil truly followed them here?

Our two leads are brilliant. Bol is desperately trying to fit in at the request of their case worker (Matt Smith) but his fear at one point leads him to crush a glass in his hands whilst he tries to maintain his calm. Rial on the other hand genuinely believes in the evil attacking them and wants to bargain with it.

A genuinely scary horror movie with social commentary and a perfect ending. Highly recommended.
