Teenager Shola “Rocks” Omotoso (Bukky Bakray) is abandoned by her mother and has to look after her younger brother Emmanuel (D’angelou Osei Kissiedu).
Rocks is a film with a lot of heart that tells a story about friendship and family through the lens of multicultural London.
Set in Hackney we see Rocks and her friends attend school, hang out and generally pass the time. But when Rocks and Emmanuel return from school one day to find a hand written note and some money from their mother their life changes for good. Her mother writes that she “needs to clear her head” and it’s clear from Rocks reaction that this has happened before. What follows is a really difficult subject told with the sort of love and passion that will have you rapt throughout.
The best facet of the film is how a group of first time actors appear so comfortable with each other. This genuinely feels like you are watching a group of people who have been best friends for years and when they are listening to music and having fun together it’s a real joy to watch.
