The year is 2092 and Earth has become nearly uninhabitable. UTS Corporation has built an orbital home for those deemed suitable to ascend and its CEO James Sullivan (Richard Armitage) has dreams of making Mars habitable for humans. Meanwhile people scrape a living as space sweepers, collecting man made space debris and selling it for scrap. One such crew is that of The Victory with Captain Jang (Kim Tae-ri), engineer Tiger Park (Seon-kyu Jin), ex commando Tae-ho (Song Joong-Ki) and their robot (Hae-Jin Yoo). When they discover an android named Dorothy (Ye-Rin Park) they initially think it is their ticket to wealth beyond their dreams but soon find it is a route to a conspiracy that their worst nightmares could not conceive.
Space Sweepers is a Korean space opera that starts out as a crazy science fiction movie with the sort of special effects a mid budget video game would be proud of that swiftly turns into “Three Men And A Baby” in space complete with fart jokes. On the subject of titles, whilst “Two Men, One Woman, A Robot And A Child” clearly would not be snappy enough the original Korean title of the film was named “The Victory” per our protagonists ship.
All of our heroes have a little bit of a back story that invest then into the over arching plot but the only one that really stands out as a lot of fun is the robot. An ex military model that now helps repair the ship, is handy with a harpoon and cracks wise. Fairly similar to Rogue One’s K-2SO. In the same way that it’s main plot is similar to the original animated Battle Angel Alita.
The entire film is an overblown bonkers romp and the mileage you get from it will be entirely based on how much you will enjoy that. I have to admit to wavering between having fun and hating it throughout its definitely too long 136 minutes. I think I would have preferred more of the Sci-Fi B movie and less of the family comedy aspect (despite the fact that it is a 15 rated film).
