Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar

Lifelong friends Barb (Annie Mumolo) and Star (Kristen Wiig) decide to go on holiday and leave the small mid western town they grew up in for the first time ever. In the sunshine of Vista Del Mar they will have the greatest adventure of their lives.

Mumolo and Wiig reunite as writers for the first time since comedy smash hit Bridesmaids and deliver a wacky comedy that is part Austin Powers, part Zoolander and part Airplane. Opening with cherub like child Yoyo (Reyn Doi) doing his paper round whilst belting out Guilty by Barbara Streisand before entering an evil lair via a secret entrance in a tree sets the scene for the madcap comedy to come.

Evil villain Sharon Gordon Fisherman (also Wiig) was embarrassed as a youngster in Vista Del Mar and wants to kill everyone in it. To do so she will use henchman Edgar (Jamie Dornan) to unleash killer mosquitoes on the town. Meanwhile culottes wearing Barb and Star are discovering that the store they worked in all their lives was meant to have shut down months ago but no one told them. At a loose end they head away on holiday and bump into Edgar where love possibly will blossom.

The entire film is filled with scattershot and bizarre comedy. It might not have the hit rate of the films I have compared it to above but it still had me regularly in stitches. Jamie Dornan gets a wonderful musical number featuring seagulls, Damon Wayans Jr. has a brilliant cameo as a very private spy and Wiig and Mumolo are clearly having the time of their lives.

A very silly, very funny comedy.
