Pay Dirt

Damien (Luke Goss) is out on parole after being caught by Sheriff Tucker (Val Kilmer) in a crime bust gone wrong five years earlier. Tucker was forced into retirement as a result but that will not stop him keeping tabs on Damien as he reassembles his crew to find the hidden money from that crime.

Pay Dirt is a genre crime/action movie that slots firmly into the straight to video/dvd category. My interest was piqued to see Val Kilmer in a reasonably major role post throat cancer alongside ex pop star Luke Goss, most famous for his roles as villains in Blade 2 and Hellboy 2.

The film itself is a rote by the numbers crime film. Writer/director Christian Sesma clearly likes Guy Ritchie and Steven Soderbergh films and liberally pieces together ideas from their crime and caper movies. Honestly at no point does it ever raise itself above being barely diverting.

As for the stars who lured me in I feel a little like I was rubbernecking. Goss amazingly has seventy-seven acting credits to his name on IMDB and clearly enjoys his second career in genre movies. Given this performance he is not capable of carrying a film and is doing a poor attempt at Jason Statham in Snatch. Kilmer on the other hand has clearly suffered greatly from his throat cancer. Always wearing a scarf or something to cover his neck, his voice sounds strangled and in some instances looks as though he has needed to overdub post filming. He does get to act alongside his daughter Mercedes and tote an assault rifle reminiscent of his famous turn in Heat. Otherwise he has little to do other than offer his name to the poster to lure suckers like me in.
