Synchronic

Steve (Anthony Mackie) and Dennis (Jamie Dornan) are two best friends working as paramedics in New Orleans. When they start to encounter a series of peculiar and horrific deaths and injuries they all seem to have a common denominator, the designer drug Synchronic. A drug that will impact them in ways they could not possibly imagine.

Synchronic is a highly original science fiction drama that takes you to places that you would not imagine from its synopsis. In an effort to reduce spoilers to a minimum I will say as little as I can about the second act revelations that form the basis of the plot.

Steve and Dennis personal lives could not be more different. Steve is a single man with no long term girlfriend whilst Dennis is married with an eighteen-year-old daughter Brianna (Ally Ioannides) heading to college and a young newborn. Steve’s main concern seem to be the constant headaches that he is getting whilst Dennis is concerned about family life. As they explore the links of the drug to the call outs they are attending it will have a bearing on both those concerns.

Anthony Mackie is the stand out here given the chance to explore the impact of the drug on his character in lots of different ways. Whilst the structure of the film is intriguing and satisfying when you understand the concept hidden within.

Synchronic does not manage exceptional status but it should win a lot of plaudits for its originality.
