Willy’s Wonderland

When a drifter’s (Nicolas Cage) car is stricken due to a forgotten police spike trap he finds himself accepting an overnight janitor job to pay off his debt. The job is at the now derelict children’s party restaurant Willy’s Wonderland. Unfortunately the creepy animatronic animals have a mind of their own and a battle for survival ensues.

Leaning heavily into its B movie status Willy’s Wonderland uses its lead star’s ability to play bonkers to maximum effect. Cage never utters a single word, wears sunglasses inside, drives a bad ass muscle car and must drink his caffeine energy drink whilst playing pinball at set intervals, no matter what else is happening at the time. He dives head first into his temporary janitorial role even when he and those around him are in peril.

Speaking of those around him, he is joined by six teenagers who have two jobs. Provide a swift and well pieced together expository flashback that tells us of the secret the town keeps and get murdered in gruesome ways. With both blood and oil flying regularly throughout.

The whole film is wacky and manages to get the right balance between awful and great. It is clever enough to not even attempt to explain some of the weirdness happening throughout and features some of the creepiest animatronic kids animals on film.

A bonkers fun B movie.
