Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy) learns that he has an illegitimate son in America who is the true heir to his throne. Bringing him home to Zamunda he sets out to train him to be a prince.
There is a scene in Coming 2 America where two characters discuss the state of the Hollywood film industry. They describe it as being full of superhero movies, remakes and sequels to really old films that no one asked for. It is a very over confident meta joke for a sequel that took thirty-three years to happen. One that I very much admire but one that is also very much misplaced.
Personally I found nothing to really like or enjoy in this belated sequel except for perhaps Wesley Snipes having lots of fun playing an insanely over the top General. It plays as a retread of the original in reverse. Instead of Eddie Murphy playing a fish out of water in Queens, we have his son Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler) playing one in Zamunda. As a result Murphy is not really the star of this film at all.
The entire film is a case of everything including the kitchen sink. Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall get to play multiple characters again and they also get the de-aging treatment for a retcon scene of the original. There are cameos, musical interludes and clips from the original film for those who can not remember it. As well as appearances from almost everyone in the original.
Unfortunately I just did not find it remotely funny.
