Pixie

Pixie (Olivia Cooke) has a plan to avenge her mother’s death and escape her gangster family by leaving West Ireland for San Francisco. Of course it all goes wrong and she ends up improvising with Frank (Ben Hardy) and Harland (Daryl McCormick) tagging along.

Halfway through watching Pixie it struck me that this film reminded me of Buffaloed with Zoey Deutch that I watched earlier this year. It features a really sparky and committed performance from a talented young actress but everything happening around her is entirely uninspiring and forgettable.

The film has a windy double crossing gangster plot where Alec Baldwin and Colm Meaney run rival gangs in the West of Ireland. Some drugs and money are stolen, some people die, a psychopathic hitman is hired and we eventually learn how Pixie’s mother died. Throughout all of this Olivia Cooke stands out as a charismatic and intriguing beacon of light in what is otherwise completely run of the mill.
