This documentary focuses on Fox Rich’s campaign to get her husband released from prison over the course of twenty years whilst raising her six children. Rob Rich was sentenced to sixty years in prison without the possibility of parole after he robbed a bank with Fox in 1997. Fox herself spent three and a half years in prison for her part in the crime.
This documentary is particularly interesting in that in this case there was no miscarriage of justice in relation to the perpetrators of the crime. Rob and Fox did rob a bank when facing financial ruin when their clothing store was facing bankruptcy. The question though is whether the judicial system handing down this sentence on someone with no prior crimes is broken and systemically racist? Whilst the film focuses on the strength of character Fox has in her relentless campaigning whilst raising a family.
Shot in black and white and using home footage to show us the children growing up across the twenty years it is an interesting and inspirational story. However even at only 81 minutes long the story does seem to meander and is not as focused as it could be. There are a lot of facts that are not given in explicit detail that I had to look up after watching as the film is more interested in Fox’s resolve over time and the children growing up without a father.
An intriguing documentary worth your time. Sorry, but I just had to!
