Recently widowed grandpa Ed (Robert DeNiro) has to move in with his daughter Sally (Uma Thurman) when he accidentally robs the local supermarket because he can not get to grips with self service check outs. Grandson Peter (Oakes Fegley) is moved from his beloved room to the attic to make space for him and he is so incensed he declares war.
Robert DeNiro’s latest foray into comedy is a family friendly affair filled with lots of physical humour that will have children (and some adults) in hysterics. It starts poorly but a couple of repetitious jokes related to Ed exposing himself to his son in law Arthur (Rob Riggle) and Sally committing traffic violations warmed it up enough for me to not lose all my goodwill. It’s silly and low brow but at least it’s amiable enough to keep you interested given the simplistic plot.
It’s main selling point is a phenomenally star studded cast. Joining DeNiro and Thurman are Christopher Walken, Jane Seymour and Cheech Marin and honestly given the script and plot it makes you wonder what the draw was for them. Perhaps their own grandchildren were fans of the 1984 novel by Robert Kimmel Smith that it is based on?
The family friendly comedy approach is a welcome change but I suspect without the overly qualified cast this would be buried on a streaming service with zero fanfare.
