Private Investigator Carson Phillips (John Travolta) is hired by a damsel in distress for a job back in his old stomping ground of Galveston, Texas. A place he left as a disgraced football star under a betting scandal. There he will come into contact with his old flame Jayne (Famke Jansen) and old friends such as Doc (Morgan Freeman), Slide (Peter Stormare) and Bing (Robert Patrick) whilst he tries to solve the case.
Set in the 1970’s Eye For An Eye is attempting to be a hard boiled detective film noir. It has a heavy handed score and gravelly voice over from Travolta (his character must smoke hundreds of cigarettes during the film) that desperately try to sell its credentials but instead make it all a little over bearing. It does have the weaving puzzle necessary for such a film but everything about the film falls flat, including a cast that twenty years ago would have guaranteed this blockbuster status. To prove that point Brendan Fraser even shows up as an effete doctor that is entirely unconvincing.
The gunfights are terrible and impossible to follow, the final plot reveals are ridiculous and Peter Stormare sings a song in a bar. I would argue that the title makes little sense but at least it is better than its original title which was “The Poison Rose”.
Only for the very curious or bored.
