Frankie

Three generations of a family are summoned to Sintra, Portugal by their matriarch, Frankie (Isabelle Huppert). Over the course of a day they discuss their troubles, hopes and dreams and the reason Frankie has called them there.

Frankie is a meandering, talkie affair. The titular character is unwell and wants to spend time with her extended family. This includes her first husband Michel (Pascal Greggory), her son from that marriage Paul (Jeremie Renier), her current husband Jimmy (Brendan Gleeson), his daughter from a previous marriage Sylvia (Vinetter Robinson), her husband Ian (Ariyon Bakare) and their daughter Maya (Sennia Nanua). Frankie has also invited her friend Ilene (Marisa Tomei) in an attempt to matchmake her with Paul but did not count on her bringing a boyfriend, Gary (Greg Kinnear). Over the course of 100 minutes the characters, usually never more than two at a time amble around the beautiful locales discussing their lives.

Initially the set up is intriguing as we get to know the characters. But as the story unfolds it becomes fairly obvious that this is just a day in the life and nothing particularly momentous is going to happen. As a result, my interest started to wane and fizzle.

The scenery is gorgeous and a brilliant advert for Portugal. The acting is fine with no one particularly standing out. Although Jeremie Renier’s Paul gets to tell the most cringeworthy family memory in a mildly surprising moment of self sabotage.

If you are in the mood for a talkie film with european vibes then this could entertain you on a lazy afternoon. But if you are looking for something eventful then move along.
