Looking for something to reignite her life Jan Vokes (Toni Collette) persuades a group of people in her small Welsh village to form a syndicate that will breed a race horse.
Based on the true story of Dream Alliance, a race horse born on an allotment that would go on to great things, Dream Horse is a sports movie that pulls all the right heart strings. The story covers pretty much every sports movie trope; the underdog that goes from rags to riches to win over the rich element that initially turned up their noses at the commoners, whilst taking in a miraculous recovery and fulfilling the owners long held lifelong dreams. But it does all of it in a way that will have you laughing, crying and rooting for that moment of victory.
Toni Collette is the star of the show embodying our hopes and making us believe a horse can bring Jan what her life has always been missing. Owen Teale and Damian Lewis are good support as Jan’s husband and business partner.
The photography and editing in the racing scenes is also really good. Horse racing is a sport that I have never had any interest for but always seems to translate well to film. One of the things that this film excels at is making the jumps incredibly scary and a moment to hold your breath during.
But perhaps the most fun elements of the film is the camaraderie between the syndicate members especially when they are having a sing song to the likes of Manic Street Preachers and Tom Jones.
Stick around for the credits sequence where we get to see the real people behind the story with the actors. You may need that time to wipe the tear welling up in your eyes.
