Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk) lives a repetitive and dull life. That is until two people break into his home and steal some petty cash and his daughter’s kitty cat bracelet.
Nobody is essentially Taken meets John Wick. Take one celebrated middle age actor not known for action roles. Assign them the role of a retired operative with special skills. Wrong their character in a way that reignites their rage and ire. Point them at some faceless Eastern European bad guys. Have them create mayhem. You could almost shout accusations of copying were it not for the fact that Nobody is written by Derek Kolstad who wrote, you guessed it, John Wick. In which case you might need to change your accusations from copying to repetition. But the reality is that the formula works and whilst this is not going to displace Keanu Reeves from his action throne it might well give directors someone else to look at when looking to cast the next Liam Neeson action film.
Odenkirk is always good value and his characters superpower here is taking as much pain as he inflicts. There is a funny cameo from Christopher Lloyd as Hutch’s nursing home bound father and the direction from Hardcore Henry creator Ilya Nuishuller does not shy away from brutal violence. Although perhaps some of the best moments are the scenes set to old fashioned songs as the violence plays out.
Is Nobody good? Yes, absolutely. Is it original? No, absolutely not. But if you want a brutal action flick this 92 minute film will hit the nail on the head. Or almost any blunt object on the head actually.
