America: The Motion Picture

An irreverent, hilarious version of how America grasped its independence told in animated form.

When Benedict Arnold (Andy Samberg) and King James (Simon Pegg) hatch a dastardly plan to kill the founding fathers only George Washington (Channing Tatum) stands in their way. Gathering a team together that includes Samuel Adams (Jason Mantzoukis) and Thomas Edison (Olivia Munn) they set out to foil their scheme and give Americans their independence.

Quite frankly, irreverent does not cut it. This film is absolutely bonkers in the best way. George Washington has pop out chainsaws attached to his arms. Benedict Arnold is a werewolf. King James is a cross between Darth Vader and Baron Harkonnen. At times it is deeply satirical such as when the team must enter a bar called Vietnam and at others it’s just deeply silly such as when we witness a Fast & Furious style race meet but of course with horses (absolutely one of the best scenes). There are riffs on Reservoir Dogs, The ‘A’ Team and Robocop to name but a few. Jokes about anachronistic comments, “what’s a car?”. And biting commentary on sexism, racism and gun culture, “thoughts and prayers”.

If you are a fan of the anarchic nature of Rick & Morty, the satire of South Park or the cutting humour of Archer you are going to love this film.

The voice cast are fantastic, the animation is gorgeous and it is rip roaringly hilarious at every turn. Oh and hang around for a mid credits scene.
