The Ice Road

When a remote diamond mine collapses there is only one possible way to save the trapped workers. Three ice road truckers must traverse the perilous frozen road that has already been closed as spring approaches.

Ever since Taken was unleashed on our screens in 2008, Liam Neeson has been an unlikely action hero showing off his particular set of skills. This time he is a big rig trucker in what might be the most ridiculously plotted film I will watch this year. To go too much into the twists, turns and jackknifes of this particular film would take a lot of the fun that will have you groaning at your television so I will settle for just the preamble.

Mike (Liam Neeson) and his brother Gurty (Marcus Thomas) have just lost their jobs again. This is thanks to the fact that his brother Gurty is a veteran with PTSD and aphasia and the profession they work in is apparently filled with bigots who like to make fun of those less able than themselves. Mike of course resolves this by punching people. Discussing their dream of buying their own big rig Mike gets the alert that an urgent job needs a driver. Wowing Goldenrod (Laurence Fishburne) with Mike’s no nonsense attitude and Gurty’s speed with a wrench they get the job alongside Tantoo (Amber Midthunder) and Goldenrod himself. Along for the ride will be the mining company’s insurance actuary Varnay (Benjamin Walker) because why not?

So there you have it. Three truckers, a mechanic and an insurance actuary set out on the ice road and you will not be prepared for the perils that await them.

The Ice Road seems like the perfect film to hit streaming services. It is so groan inducing and hilariously bad that it was actually an awful lot of fun to watch with my better half as we pointed out every terrible moment or half baked plot point. And whilst I was laughing at the bizarre fight scenes that appear to happen in slow motion and the preposterous twists in the story I have to say I was impressed with the vehicular stunts. Even if in a couple of crucial moments I swear those lorries miraculously swapped places.

So if one night you find yourself just like Goldenrod and in need of an ice road trucker why don’t you settle in for an unintentionally good laugh and watch The Ice Road.
