The Croods: A New Age

The Croods meet the Bettermans. A more evolved family of humans who threaten to split up the Croods.

Seven years after the original film Dreamworks Animation dish up a sequel that is better in every way. A much more engaging story, filled with laughs and a much brighter animation style that is far more interesting to the eye.

Guy (Ryan Reynolds) falls in love with Eep (Emma Stone) and just when father and clan leader Grug (Nicholas Cage) starts to worry that he may separate their clan they find a garden of Eden occupied by the Bettermans. Phil (Peter Dinklage), Hope (Leslie Mann) and Dawn (Kelly Marie Tran) are a modern day Stone Age family. Just like the Swiss Family Robinson and the Flintstones they have amenities like showers, toilets and lifts in an ancient and primitive time. Whilst the Bettermans want Guy to stay they are not so sure about the Croods.

The majority of the jokes are about modern day concerns in a thousands year old setting and they do a pretty good job of making you laugh. There are cutesy sloths for young children to coo at and the fauna mostly consists of made up animals from two or more real animals merged together. Spider-wolves and Koala-monkeys are cuter than you would think.

The message of widening your world view is also welcome given the target audience is young children.

A successful sequel to a minor animation.

  1. In my opinion the original is the better feature, with a much more anarchic sense of fun. However this is a very funny follow up and the last section of the film with the punch monkeys is inventive and very amusing. Here’s hoping for more Croods adventures
