Xtreme

When Lucero (Oscar Jaenada) forcefully takes power of his father’s crime syndicate he leaves a trail of dead bodies in his wake. Whilst he fails to kill his adopted brother Max (Teo Garcia) he succeeds in killing Max’s young son setting him on a path of revenge.

Xtreme is a Spanish language action movie set in Barcelona. The original story idea is credited to star Teo Garcia and the film is a vehicle for his quite impressive action credentials. Director Daniel Benmayor delivers a stylish, brutal and fast paced action film that is quite a lot of fun.

The opening action sequence sees Lucero and Max laying waste to an entire cocaine factory before Lucero lights a cigar off of a dead body that is on fire. At this point there is no doubt who the villain of the piece will be. This opening sequence gave me huge Jon Woo Hong Kong action movie vibes and certainly sets the tone for what is to come. Max will later form an attachment with a surrogate son whilst he fights his way through armies of henchmen.

The fight sequences follow the Jason Bourne approach of anything can be a weapon and the Raid approach of our protagonist taking on many enemies at once. A sequence set in a garage is particularly inventive and fun.

Xtreme provides a lot of fun and is effectively a European competitor to the likes of John Wick.
