A family who go on holiday to an idyllic paradise discover the secluded private beach they are on is ageing them at a dramatic rate. Can they discover what is causing this effect or find a way to escape before it is too late?
Based on a graphic novel called Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters the latest film from M. Night Shyamalan is a peculiar mix of body horror, terrible dialogue, an intriguing idea and of course a twist.
The film as a whole is an odd proposition in that it always pulls away from its horror moments, has an intriguing plot that has been completely given away by every single piece of advertising and at times has dialogue that is so unbelievably bad it is almost humorous. And yet, despite all this you will still find yourself wanting to find out how exactly the story will end. It also features Shyamalan doing another cringe worthy cameo!
Old features a large array of very good actors but none get to shine thanks to the incredibly on the nose script. The characters regularly have to utter incredibly bizarre and unbelievable statements. Sometimes explaining to us what is happening and sometimes making huge leaps of logic to help the story move along. The likes of Vicky Krieps, Gael Garcia Bernal, Thomasin McKenzie, Rufus Sewell and Eliza Scanlen work wonders just being able to utter the words, let alone make it work.
As for the twist itself, I am not convinced it is earned in the same way it was in some of his earlier films. It certainly does not have the impact of the others.
Despite all of this negativity it still somehow works. Yes I could understand some people might find it unintentionally hilarious but I constantly found myself wanting to know what would happen. Now that I do, I do not think I will ever need to visit this beach again.
