Space Jam: A New Legacy

Twenty-Five years after Michael Jordan led the Tune Squad in a game of basketball against the Goon Squad we now have a sequel where current basketball legend LeBron James gets to do the same thing.

The plot has evil artificial intelligence Al G. Rhythm (Don Cheadle) kidnap LeBron’s son and turn him against him thanks to the fact that LeBron fails to let him be himself. The underlying message throughout is pretty heavy handed, LeBron wants his sons to work as hard as he did at basketball and forgets that the game is supposed to be fun.

The plot beats are pretty straightforward. Our hero and villain are set up. Cheadle’s villain follows Captain Hook’s policy from Spielberg’s Hook to present himself as a nicer father figure to turn the son against the father. LeBron and the Looney Tunes have a montage through other Warner Brothers properties to put a team together and train. And finally there is the basketball match the whole film is about.

Ultimately though I have to be honest that this film is such a snooze fest for adults I literally fell asleep. That bit I mentioned above where LeBron James travels through other Warner Brothers properties and trains the team. I slept through all of that on first watch and needed a second round to appreciate the film taking the kids film into scenes from Casablanca, Mad Max and The Matrix. There is also one scene reminiscent of Ready Player One where lots of Warner IP’s burst onto the scene to form the audience.

My children on the other hand loved it and that is despite the fact they have no idea of who LeBron James is and have never seen a game of basketball. Nor are they old enough to have seen almost any of the other Warner films the characters travel through or see on screen. The fun and games that the Looney Tunes provide was enough for them to enjoy the product in front of them.

Clearly the film was a big draw for acting talent though, with Sonequa Martin-Green, Sarah Silverman, Stephen Yeun, Michael B. Jordan and Zendaya appearing in small to infinitesimal cameos.

By all means take the kids to enjoy themselves but lower your own expectations or plan that nap!

  1. I fell asleep in this one as well, simply because of how hot the cinema screening was. The children did seem to love it. I thought it was alright, not as bad as some people are making out. It is a kid’s film and if they like it, then it works.

    1. Love to hear it was not just me!

Completely agree on the kids enjoying it though. It was not a wasted trip. (Oh and thank goodness for cinema subscriptions that allowed me to fill in that bit I fell asleep during!)

  2. Absolutely awful . Interesting to see the comments about children liking it, especially with its references to It, Mad Max and Clockwork Orange. All that said, I thought the Michael Jordan joke (which I won’t explain here) was the best moment of the movie
