Jolt

Lindy (Kate Beckinsale) has an impulse control problem that often ends with violent consequences. To temper those issues her psychiatrist Dr. Munchin (Stanley Tucci) has created an electric shock device that is strapped to her body, giving her the ability to jolt herself whenever she feels it surging out of control. Following his advice she goes on a date with Justin (Jai Courtney) in an attempt to do something normal, however when he winds up dead she decides to use her issues as a way to get to those who killed him.

Jolt is an awful film. It opens with a terrible montage of Lindy as a young child with a voiceover that gives us the entirety of what passes for plot and continues to go downhill from there. Beckinsale and Tucci are better than this and appear to be sleepwalking through their parts. Courtney on the other hand has form for being in bad action movies. Later Bobby Canavale and Laverne Cox will show up as the worst type of cartoon character cops you see in films. One with a heart of gold and the other a hard ass.

The travesty continues with dull, uninspiring action sequences with very obvious stunt doubles. Whilst the villains are so forgettable they are hardly worth mentioning.

The fact that the whole thing is a poor copy of Crank 2: High Voltage is made more insulting by the fact that in this film they are using the electricity to stop the violent urges rather than to propel the character forward. Although oddly, for someone meant to have poor impulse control it is strange that most of the violence does not actually happen and is just her imagining doing it.

Then to cap it all, just when you think it’s over Susan Sarandon shows up to give a big speech about how they want to make sequels. Please do not make sequels!

On a plus point it is only 91 minutes long.
