People Just Do Nothing: Big In Japan

Brentford pirate radio station Kurupt FM has stopped broadcasting and it’s members are now working as a postman and at the local bowling alley. That is until a Japanese television show starts to use one of their songs and they are invited to do a gig in Japan.

People Just Do Nothing is a BBC mockumentary that aired 27 episodes between 2014-2018. Prior to this film being advertised at my local cinema I had never seen a single episode so I prepared for the film by watching the first episode entitled ‘Secret Location’. I have to admit to not being totally enthralled by what I saw despite appreciating the concept for the show and it’s humour. The film, unfortunately for me was essentially an episode of the show tripled in length. It even lifted some of the jokes I saw in that debut episode directly into the feature length version.

The plot of the film follows the band being torn apart by the pressures of fame and a manipulative agent. The humour follows the exact pattern of the episode of the show I watched. Five incredibly dumb men blindly stumble their way through their delusions that they are the next best thing in garage music. Simply think of five David Brent’s in one place.

For me the show and the film is a one trick pony that outstays it’s welcome incredibly fast. If you are a fan of the show I suspect you will love it.
