Spider-Man: No Way Home

Spider-Man’s (Tom Holland) secret identity has been revealed and not only is it making Peter Parker’s life a misery it is impacting the lives of all of those around him. Seeking help from Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) ultimately results in more chaos when Peter interrupts the spell resulting in villains from other universes arriving in this one.

The fact that I want to preserve this film’s secrets and plot lines means that I will limit my commentary to generalities and only the content within the trailers. Which in itself is incredibly difficult to do because the film is so great for all sorts of fandoms that I want to talk about it at length. What I will say though if you simply want to stop here out of a fear of the slightest inkling of a spoiler is that this film is genuinely brilliant. My son and I spoke about it non stop for thirty minutes after leaving the cinema and probably would have spoken for longer if he did not need to go to bed! It has also ignited his interest in everything Spider-Man so I now look forward to more movie watching with him.

The plot, as you will know from the previous entry in the franchise and trailers surrounds Mysterio’s reveal of Peter Parker’s identity and the arrival of villains from other universes who just so happen to be the villains from Sony’s Spider-Man films pre Marvel Cinematic Universe. It works as a fantastic way to explore what it is to be Spider-Man. How will this Spider-Man react to these villains and deal with them?

If you have followed my reviews on the other Jon Watt’s MCU Spider-Man films you will know that I was pretty lukewarm to the original and appreciated the sequel more. Well it seems like Watt’s and Tom Holland’s version of the web slinger just seems to get better and better as they explore more of the character. Holland gives a much more emotional performance and really gets to explore his character motivations and growth.

The action sequences are spectacular and truly exciting whilst the comedy is light and humorous. Whilst anyone who is knowledgeable with Sony’s pre MCU films, the MCU itself and Spider-Man will be gorging on a feast of in jokes and references over what I imagine would be multiple viewings.

Anyone who has any affection for anything Spider-Man or Marvel is going to love this film. It has so many crowd pleasing moments, so much heart and soul and lands every web swing it takes.

As ever, stay for a mid and end credits sting.
